Interactive Fiction and Visual Novels
this week in class, we discussed our first project brief. this project will be about creating our own visual novel style game, which i am super excited about. to gather inspiration and ideas, we began to research different types of visual novels and fiction storytelling games. these types of games can be played and created in many different ways, and the gameplay varies greatly depending on the different story's told by them. it's really important that we complete this phase before actually beginning anything, as it helps to not only generate ideas for what types of stories we could create for our own games - but also to get a better understanding of how these types of games can be played out and experienced.
to gather some insight and research, we went on a site called itch.io and looked through the selection of different fictional novels and games created by different people. from this list, we went through and selected a few that interested us and played through them.

2 visual novels that interested me:
after finding two games i found interesting, i began to play through them to see what they were like - the type of stories they involved, choices to be made and how the game and its mechanics can work.
GAME 1: YOU LEFT ME - by angela he
this game was a short but deep interactive visual novel following the main character who remains nameless, who awakes in a strange world with foggy memories. by playing through the game, exploring and selecting through the different options and locations presented towards the player, you begin to uncover the blurry past of the main character and discover some heavy topics, such as loss, grief, depression and more. I really liked the story and artwork for this game! it was quite short but still offered many different endings and i really loved the style and surrealistic feel it had to it.
the second game i chose to play followed the more classic visual novel style. i mainly chose it because the name interested me, and i also really like the art style of it. This game had really beautiful artwork! the backgrounds where all really detailed and immersed you into the world, and the dialogue was easy to follow along with. this game followed a more classic visual novel game style, where a character appears and you tap through their dialogue one by one, with narrator boxes appearing to explain things such as the setting and things a character cant quite communicate themselves. This game was much longer than the previous one i played through, as i only managed to get through a portion of the prologue/start within about half an hour. I would defiently play this again though, especially for a full play through as the game managed to interest me within that first 30 minutes.Anon, Tomorrow will be dying by team robo [online]. itch.io.
