Setting up the Team & Research
Today in class we began to set up for our group project where we were tasked with creating a visual novel together. We got together in our group and began by discussing ideas together and discussing what each of our weaknesses and strengths were.
Idea Generation
As a group, we started brainstorming ideas for our game together. we decided we wanted to create a visual novel based around a MC who was dealing with these illnesses, and wanted to tell a story from a very realistic perspective that shows the harsh and dark reality of how it feels to deal with this disorders. We decided to all go home and research a few different things, such as different art styles, and different games with a similar plot or story to help us gather some more inspiration. We said we would regroup and share ideas once everyone had gathered some research to brainstorm ideas together and fully flesh out our plot.
Notes from class:
Things to research/look into
- game art styles we like
- gameplay styles
- possible games with similar storylines/plots
Roles
we decided to assign everybody roles based on what our strengths and weaknesses were. We all agreed to help each other with everything and would all take part in each different area, but we needed everyone to have leadership over one portion of the game, so we assigned roles based on that. Setting up a TeamSpace
We also decided to create a TeamSpace where we can all collaborate and share ideas, as well as hosting things like meetings if we needed. We set up a discord server for the 6 of us and sorted everything into different sections as well as assigning each of us our respective roles. We also created a Miro board, where we can share ideas and also plan things out in a bit more organised fashion. For example, on Miro you can create workflow charts to plan and prioritise certain tasks - which will defiently become more useful as we go along with planning and creating our game and need things like assests and designing's completed for certain timeframes.
Benchmark Games Research
As well as organising our space, we also began to research into a few games to use as sources of inspiration and gather some moodboards to help collect our ideas. I decided to create a document containing a few visual novels I found interesting and felt we could use as a source of inspiration for our game.
Benchmark Games
I created a small research document, looking to a selection of a few different visual novel style games that i thought were interesting, and could be used as a source of inspiration for our game. I chose a few games I found interesting and write small notes about each that I felt could benefit our group work.
I looked into a selection of different games, and write a few notes about each one. These notes consisted on features of the games I liked, stylistic choices and things i thought could work well in our own game. Out of all the games i looked into, I think the game that would work the best for the style we wanted was the game 'Missed Messages'. This game has a very cozy and soft artstyle, but covers some dark and more serious topics which I think would fit well for our game too. As well as this, there is phone and texting mechanic within the game, which is something our group discussed of possibly doing too.
As well as this, Katie our group leader compiled a selection of games we could use for art style inspiration too. I think that all these games have a very soft, water coloured style with bright and warm colours which I think would work for our game too. Throughout our game colour will be really important, as as the game progresses the world around will begin to loose its colour which would be more more evident if we used brighter colours at the start.
Further Research and Notes
As well as looking to a few games, I also set up a Pinterest board for us to use. This board contained sections on many different things that we needed visual inspiration for, as well as allowing anyone else to add their own sections to the board.
