artist toolkit 2d: muscle and pose study

Muscle and Pose Study

This week in class, we studied the different muscles in the body and how they look in different positions and poses. Having a good understanding of different muscles, their shapes and how they work within movement of different features of the body is extremely important and useful especially when creating poses and figure drawing.
For our first task/warmup, we were tasked with drawing a very simple wireframe of a person. We were then given 15 minutes to draw the muscles on top of our wireframe to the best of our abilities from memory.

After the 15 minutes were up, we were allowed to look up refences and change and alter whatever we missed or did wrong. The sketch at the top is my complete drawing after looking at references. The one in the middle was my first attempt from memory, and the sketch at the bottom was my initial wireframe.

For our next task, we were given the remainder of the lesson to practice drawing different poses and place the muscles on top of wireframe. For this, I used a few different poses of people playing different sports. I went with poses of ice skaters at first, as I really liked the poses they made as they looked very elegant and fun to draw, and also felt like they would be good practice for generally drawing muscles. Most poses ice skaters make involve them stretching out their arms and legs, while also bending them while preforming things like spins. This would be a good way to practice drawing muscles from different angles.

To help me understand where certain muscles went and have a good referecn3e, I used a 3D model i found on sketchfab that displayed all the different muscles on  a human. This was a really useful way of looking at references, at it allowed me to see the human body from any angle i required and could use as a reference.
