Hand Studies
This week, we practice hand studies in class! We were given a large variety of hands to draw, and tasked with drawing 50 different hand poses across the course of the rest of the year. I felt that this task was pretty fair, and I personally love drawing hands so I was happy to do this!
I used a variety of different refences for the hands I drew. I drew a selection of them from the presentation in class and also on the NOW, but I also drew a few from references I gathered from Pinterest and also using my own hands.
I tasked myself with drawing these studies in a limited time. All the hands I drew varied from between 3-10 minutes depending on the complexities of the poses. I limited myself to taking no longer than 10 minutes per hand, as I had a lot to get through! I started out by drawing some relatively simple poses of relaxed hands from different angles.
After a while, I began to draw some more complex poses, showing hands handing and interacting with different objects. When drawing any form of anatomy, whether it be hands, arms, heads etc. I often find it hard to draw them interacting with objects or other people quite challenging. I feel as though sometimes when I draw things interacting the often end up looking stiff. So, i decided to fill a page of hands interacting with different things in different ways to try and practice this. A lot of these poses were quite confusing, but I actually had a lot of fun drawing them.
These 23 hands are what I drew in my first session working on this task. I will continue to update and add to this blog as I go along, to complete drawing all 50 different hands.
I continued to work on my hand drawings over the next few weeks, gradually drawing a few hands whenever I had the chance. I used these hand drawings as a way to warmup before completing full on pieces or other work, as they allowed me to create something quickly and warm up my skills.
I drew a variety of different poses, including some with different hands interacting. I gathered some pose references that included hands in similar poses from different angles to really help myself understand how hands could look like from different angles. Personally, I really enjoy drawing hands so i really enjoyed completing this task.
