Week 6: Base Mesh Creation

══════════════════════════════════════════════════════

This week in class, we discussed what a base mesh is, how to use it and practiced creating our own models in ZBrush.

In ZBrush, a Base Mesh is the starting point for a sculpt/model. The base mesh acts as a starting point for any model, usually consisting of a simplified version of whatever you are creating. For example, if you were modelling a human, you would break the body down into simplified parts and shapes to make it easier to begin sculpting. After the base mesh is created, you can then add further depth and details as you go onwards.

Sculpting Faces

When sculpting faces, it is easiest to break the face down into multiple sections. For example, sectioning things like the forehead, cheekbones, eyes and nose etc. into smaller sections. This allows for an easier sculpt and for the proportions of your model to be more accurate. Stylised models still follow this process, just with slightly more leeway and exaggerated features. When sculpting anatomy, it is a good idea to use a variety of different references like the example below.

When sculpting faces, there are many tools that can be used as well to make the process easier. A good example of this is the symmetry tool, which can be activated and deactivated by pressing X. This allows you to perfectly replicate both sides of your model to help get your anatomy correct.

Anatomy Breakdown

When it comes to creating and sculpting bodies, it is good to break the anatomy down into multiple sections too similarly too the face. Below, is an example with a quick body I drew for reference. By sectioning a model into different parts it makes sculpting much more manageable. It is good to model each of these parts as separate Subtools within ZBrush, and then when you are happy with the shape, merging them together into one Subtool.
