3D Model Beginning Progress - Head

This week, I began making progress starting on my 3D model. In this blog, I will document the first steps of my 3D Modelling process! As well as documenting this progress in video form which can be found as a sped up video on youtube linked below, I also documented basic steps i took throughout my process and wrote about each step and what i was working on.

Creating the Face

To start my model, i began with creating the face/head. I wanted to keep my model low poly to begin with, as it would allow me to easily block out the features and begin to detail and add things later one once I could begin to picture the full Thing. I started with a sphere shape, which I turned symmetry on the begin with.

I followed a long a very helpful set of video tutorials found on YouTube, where an artist demonstrates his process in a style similar to what I wanted to recreated.

I then began to stretch out the sphere using the Move tool within ZBrush. I used this brush a lot when starting out and beginning to shape different features such as body parts of pieces of hair. It allows you to move and shape objects very easily and especially on a larger scale.  I also sketched on top of my model to block out abouts where I thought the eyes would look best.

Once i had a face shape I was happy with, I began to create an area on the face For the eye sockets using the guidelines I previously marked out.  This will be where i place the eyeballs later on within my process. I carved this holes out using the Clay buildup tool and inverting so the tool would dig invards. I did this all with symmetry turned on so both sides would be equal.

I had to constantly rotated the head model to make sure it also looked okay from a side angle. Since my model and art style is pretty cartoon and chibi like, I didn't have to worry too much about having a detailed side view.

Once I was happy with the face shape i created, I began to make the ears. I imported a new Subtool of another sphere, which i reshaped using the Move,Scale and Rotate tools to resize appropriately. I reshaped the ear using the Move tool once again, and neatened it up as i went along using the smooth tools. When i was happy with the basic shape, I used the Mirror and Weld Tool to mirror the subtool onto the other size of the head and merge them to the same layer, So i had a separate subtool/layer just for the ears.

With that, I was complete with modelled my head/face! This was just a very basic blockout, but I'm happy with the result! My next steps are to begin modelling my body of my model!
