building alliances - final overview

 Final Project Overview

In this blog I will discuss my final thoughts on this project, cover the work I completed as well as my groups final work, what I think went well and what I think i could've improved upon and/or liked to do/change!

Overall Thoughts

Overall, I personally enjoyed this project a lot. I thought that the brief was interesting and that our game idea worked well to accommodate for the brief while also having a unique take upon it.  While there are things I found slightly hard or didn't enjoy during this project, I think that overall I enjoyed it and found it interesting.

Group Overview

My group, Banshee Studios, in my opinion worked really well together. I enjoyed working and sharing ideas with the others in my group and felt that all of our styles and ideas worked well together which was a big positive for me. I felt that my group was active and willing to engage with each other, and that for almost the entire project everyone carried their own weight and helped each other when needed. Everyone was responsive with giving feedback on things such as designs and ideas which helped us to develop our work together easy, and each of us organised tasks under their management (such as 2D lead assigning 2D tasks, 3D lead organising which models we should each complete, research lead assigning research tasks and our director organising all our work, meetings and tasks with deadlines). I think that given more time I would've liked to help complete more things and show further development of our game, but I still think that our group completed a lot of work and almost all of the things we set out to do! I really enjoyed working with everyone on this project.

Personal Reflection: What Went Well For Me

During this project, I think I did a good job taking on my role of the research lead. As research lead, it was my task to mainly conduct most of the research and assign other research tasks to members of my group. These tasks consisted of things such as environment research to help get a better understanding of the caves and Nottingham's environment to help make our game feel more fleshed out and realistic, visual research such as studying different games to take inspiration from, and collating moodboards of images, colours and many other things we could use to help aid our designs. Overall i think our group did a good job with our research, and that we thoroughly researched things that would benefit our project. We constantly looked back at what we could improve or change and I organised and tasked people with going off the research each thing accordingly.
As well as this, I think I also did well in the work on my concept designs and UI final designs I did which were tasked by our 2D lead and director. Since my role as research was mainly more important at the start, once we had fleshed out our idea and knew what we were going for I was mainly given tasks by the others in my group to help out as they had done for me at the beginning. I personally really like the work i created that i was tasked to, and i think the Ui designs i made worked well with the style and feel as the rest of ourgame. I gathered feedback and opinions from my group constantly too to see what the others thought and to help generate new ideas too.

Personal Reflection: Improvements I Can Make

While there are things that I thought went well with this project, there are also things I think i would do different if i were to do it again and improve upon it. I think the main thing i struggled with during this project was my productivity and organisation. I think i struggle with this a lot in general, but within this project I defiently felt like it was worse than usual. With the pressure of a group behind me and the deadlines we set for us to complete work I felt like there were times when I would let me work slip up and have a bit of catching up to do. I think i managed to catch up eventually and sort most things out, but it leaves me feeling stressed and would be much easier if I stayed on top of everything as it came along. I think in the future for upcoming projects and work, creating schedules and checklists to stay up to date with constantly would really benefit me. I started to do this more so towards the end of this project and i felt like it really helped so it's definitely something I would like to practice moe in the future.
As well as this, I think if i did this project again I would of liked to have more examples of everything. This goes for things such as research and my concepts/variations of the work i created. While i think my research was good, I definitely think i could have done more in certain areas and thoroughly covered a few more areas in more depth. I also would have liked to have created more variations of things like thumbnails and colour variants of some of my concepts, as i think they really help to show variation and give a much bigger selection of ideas to work from.

Work Recap

Below, is an image with a selection of a few of the things i worked on and completed during this project. This consists of: a lot of research notes, moodboards, character moodboards, UI concepts and final designs, character sprites, environment concepts, 3D modelled environment concepts and assets and thumbnails. I think i did a good variety of work over the span of this project, and felt that my contributions to my group were good.

Powerpoint Presentation Game Pitch Final

For our final submission, we needed to create a final pitch presentation similar to the first one we created for our formative. Below is a link to our final presentation, containing a synopsis of our game, other information and all our concept art, final designs, game art and 3d models etc. We all collectively worked on our powerpoint and each added our own work and small annotations to each section.
