Final Furniture Design Sheets

This blog contains my final designs for my street furniture, as well as information about their designs and my process behind them. After previously doing my colourways and developing my concepts, I settled on designs I was happy with. I slightly changed and further finalised variants of my concept designs, and chose an overall colour palette to go with.

Originally, when I was designing my colourways, I used slightly different colours for each of my furniture's enough to make them look unique, but I also still wanted them to look consistent. To combine these two ideas, I decided to keep the metallic features/machinery in the same colour palette and instead have features such as small wires, buttons and things like the liquid inside the tubes to be different colours. This way, the designs would still look consistent and work well together while also being different enough so that they didn't look repetitive.

Containment Tube

Tubes used for storing creatures to be experimented upon, as well as storing a substance called 'the Miracle Serum.' Many experiments are conducted here that include submerging creatures in this substance to see the effects.

For my containment tube, I went with a mainly darker palette. This works well with the brighter colour I used for the liquid inside the container, which can also be seen on certain buttons and wires across the design. The brightness of the liquid draws the viewer's eyes towards to centre of it, and also creates a mysterious and cooler feeling due to the usage of cooler more blue toned colours used in the design.

Computer Terminal

A computer terminal connected to the Mazon labs Database. They are mainly used to document information and statistics for the experiments conducted within the lab.  The information documented within the terminal is very vague or  simply straight up lies to disguise from the truth of the experiments that go on within the lab..

For my computer terminal, I went for a slightly different colour palette in comparison to the other two designs. Unlike the others, which mainly focus on a darker blue/grey palette, this design is mainly based on a lighter palette. I did this for a few different reasons - one being that I felt that as the panel is connected to the wall, it would need to be a different colour to the individual furniture as otherwise the entire room would feel too dark and the containment tubes/fish-bot would not stand out against the background.

I also did this as a way to contrast the two types of work conducted in the lab. In the containment tubes and fish-bots, dangerous experiments and testing is conducted. These experiments could be viewed as dark or evil which contrast with the terminal. I felt that this terminal would be connected and used vastly across the company, and would be used to track stats and information. Within Deadzone, the Faction of Mazon Labs are seen as a safe and 'good' company, working towards the better of humanity and the future. However behind closed doors corruption and more sinister things and experiments take place. I think this can be perfectly shown throughout my furniture, seen within the company monitored computer terminal creating a false perfect image in contrast to the darker experiments going on behind the scenes.

Fish-Bot

Small containment tube like machinery. They were made as smaller prototypes to contain and conduct experiments on a smaller scale for smaller or simpler creatures. Many different variants of the 'bots' exist, programed with legs to be manoeuvred. Despite their appearance, they aren't controller and moved by the creatures stored within them - they can be controlled via a remote/panel by the person in charge.

Similarly to my Containment Tube, I used a darker colour palette for the exterior of this object. This contrasts well with the brightness of the contents, drawing attention towards the centre of it. For the creatures that can be seen inside, I didn't want to make them too cool toned to the point they didn't stand out, but I also didn't want them to be too bright that they looked out of place. I ended up settling on a very muted and cooled version of green and red, which ended up coming out more turquoise and pink. However I think these muted tones work much better, as they stand out just enough to catch a viewers attention. I also tried to keep the overall feel and palette similar to the containment tubes, to show that they are used for similar processes and experiments.

Overall, I am happy with my final furniture designs. I think I managed to create consistent designs that look like they belong in the same environment and work well together. I think keeping the darker metal casing on things like the containment tube and fish-bot where a good difference in comparison to the light grey/white of the computer machinery. This difference in colour conveys the different between organised and controlled company work that is studied and documented on the computer terminal compared to the messy and dangerous nature of the experiments conducted by my character inside the testing tubes. as well as this, the contrast works well against one another. I also think the usage of cooler tones such as blues and purples worked well to create a mysterious feeling to the furniture.
