Clothing Folds and Fabric

This week I practiced studying clothing and fabric folds. Clothing is something I find really interesting to draw, as I really like the way certain fabrics look and fold over themselves and look against the body. I think they're really interesting to draw!

Below, are a few rendered clothing studies I did in my own time. I really enjoy studying clothing and think these turned out quite nice. I especially like the one on the left, as I felt the folds and shading/colouring looked accurate and felt that the fold all looked like they were coming from the correct source. When fabric drapes, it usually folds coming from a certain point. This can be seen in areas such as elbows and the backs of legs, when clothing scrunches and folds due to the tension in that area bending and moving frequently. I think that the illustration on the right could be improved, as I feel that some of the shading looks too random and doesn't make as much sense. This can be seen especially around areas such as the pockets. I think this could be fixed by adding more shading with a higher contrast to stop the clothes feeling flat, and also moving the placement of some of the folds.

I also practiced drawing some different types of clothing, studying where the folds where and how they looked. In different types of fabrics, folds and creases look different. For example, in the trousers on this image the folds are mostly around the foot and ankle area, as that's where the bulk of the pants sit. In the shirt, the folds flow down and outwards from the waistline, as that area is sinched in creating the flowlines and also the folds as pressure is around that area.

I did a variety of different studies of different types of fabrics and clothing to get a better understanding of different techniques and fold types. Learning these skills will help me drastically when I have to do work involving clothing and character design, which re tow things I enjoy doing a lot so these skills will be very beneficial to me.
