 Project Overview and Reflection

This blog contains an overview of my entire project, as well as discussing my processes, problems I had and things I have learnt and enjoyed over the course of this project!

My Finalised Project and Process

Here is a link to my finalised model, which can be viewed inside of SketchFab!

Thoughts and Feelings on my Work

Overall, I am really happy with how my model turned out. There are a few things I would've liked to off changed or retried, bit overall I am still pleased with the result. Until this project, I haven't really understood much 3D work and felt quite confused about how to go about creating my model, but as i progressed and worked on it over the last few weeks I have learnt a lot of new skills! Comparing to work I had done previously, I really feel like I have improved a lot and really enjoyed making my model. I'd like to develop my 3D skills further in the future too. I enjoyed the project brief, and I really like the character design I created. When we were given the project brief, I knew that I wanted to do something cute and fun as a way to push myself to enjoy this project more and work harder to complete it to a better standard than if I were to do something that didn't interest me.

What went Well and I Enjoyed

In general, I actually really enjoyed this project. I specifically enjoyed sculpting my model and watching her come to life. As I was sculpting and encountered errors, I learnt a lot of new skills and how to deal with different things and fix mistakes I made. I feel like if I were to do this project again with the knowledge I had now, it would not only take me less time but also I feel I would be able to produce something to an even higher standard. I also surprisingly enjoyed UVing and making my textures. It took me a while to understand Uving, but when I knew what i was doing i really enjoyed it! The same goes for texturing too.

What Could be Improved

Despite enjoying this project and being proud of what I created, there were defiently things I could've improved on. I encountered a lot of problems when making my model, mainly being down to not knowing how to use the software or what tools or buttons exactly I was looking for, causing me to do a lot of things in a much more tedious way which created problems later on. An example of these problems for example could be my models eyes. In ZBrush, I shaped her eyes the fit the sockets I made. However, when i took these into Maya to texture it became quite difficult as things didn't line up properly, and they were both different shapes. This resulted in my scrapping them and making new ones just using spheres, which is why her eyes look slightly strange on my finished model. I also encountered a lot of problems with my UV and Topology. An example of this could be where the seams of some of my UVs don't line up perfectly, causing some of the textures to be slightly unaligned. I think now i know about these issues, it would be a lot easier for me to fix them in the future. A lot of problems I encountered could be fixed by experience and manually and slowly fixing things like my topology.

On thing I would like to improve on and learn how to do properly is rigging. For my model I only do a very simplistic rig using the Quick Rig tool. In the future, I want to learn how to do this manually. As I didn't really understand rigging myself and was on a time crunch, I opted to Auto Rig my model. In the future, I would like to learn how to do this myself!
